The new Museum occupies the first three floors and the courtyard of an important building of Bologna, the Palazzo Pepoli Vecchio, dating back to the XIV century. The original building has been extended, modified and richly decorated mainly in the XVIII and XIX centuries. Some columns and arches in the main entrance and the external facades belong to the original building.
The project deals with the historical parts, which will be refurbished, with the courtyard, which will be covered and transformed into the museum’s hall, and with the museum exhibition design itself. The new construction inside the courtyard, in glass and steel, will also add new staircases to ease the visit of the museum, and will house temporary exhibitions.
